Very good and very bad
This is a beautiful kettle and it boils water very, very quickly. But the reviews about the the foul chemical smell and taste are correct, at least with mine. I chose to ignore the bad reviews regarding the smell and I bought this two weeks ago. As soon as I unpacked it I could detect what the other reviewers were referring to. Every night since I got the kettle, a solution of either vinegar and water, baking soda and water, or lemon juice and water has sat in my kettle, all to no avail. I called Capresso after the first week and the customer service rep acknowledged the problem and suggested the lemon juice. She was very nice and told me to be sure to call back if that didn't work. After a week of trying the lemon juice, I still got the foul smell and taste in the water. I use filtered water that tastes fine before it goes into this kettle. When I called Capresso back, as directed by the first rep with whom I spoke, the rep who answered my call told me that I could send it...

Rubber/silicone washer around the heating element boils with water and emits foul smell: Dangerous Product!!!
This is, indeed, an awesomely designed kettle, unrivaled by any. A glass kettle is just a brilliant design.

But it has a serious design flaw. The heating element is like half a metal ball that protrudes from the bottom of the kettle. In order to place the glass kettle around it and seal it, they use a silicone/rubber washer.

This is what causes the foul smell. I cannot believe how people can simply fail to understand that even if the smell goes away, the chemicals emitted in the water do not! And I cannot understand why people are giving manufacturers such an easy time and not look after their own health.

Saddest thing, this is the easiest flaw to fix. Instead of a glass bottom, they should have had a stainless steel bottom that could fuse seamlessly with the heating element. The bottom could form a short rim up the sides of the kettle, and the glass could be fitted into this metal base. This would still require some material to seal the glass...
Looks can be deceiving
I ordered this kettle specifically to avoid heating up water in plastic. However, this kettle emitted a foul chemical odor that also transferred to the water. I boiled it a few times plus tried the water/vinegar suggestion in the brochure but nothing seemed to help. I decided that I didn't want to take the risk of drinking these unknown chemicals so I'm returning it - it's not worth the risk. I can't figure out if it's coming from the "stainless steel" bulb (that feels like plastic to me if you tap on it) that covers the heating element or the plastic seal between the glass & the bulb. Plus the lid has a stong odor too & that is plastic covered in "stainless steel".

New tea snob in the making thanks to this excellent kettle
I am relatively new to the tea scene (my wife and I started drinking Teavana teas about a year ago) and as such I have been searching for a really good kettle. I wanted an electric kettle because of their ease of use as well as the extra features some of the nicer kettles offer. After an exhaustive search I decided upon the Breville SK500XL Ikon Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle based in no small part to the excellent reviews it has received on Amazon and other sites.

I went to a few stores to examine it in person and compare it to about ten other electric kettles that the different stores carried but nothing seemed to come close to the design and quality of the Breville. So after finally making my decision, it was simply a matter of time before I made my purchase. I am very glad I waited as within 2 weeks this new Breville kettle was released. The viewing window and lid are polycarbonate
First, this kettle is gorgeous! I bought it for it's beauty and easy to use variable temperature and the fact it had a viewing window to easily see how much water was inside. Before I used it, I emailed Breville to find out what type of plastic the viewing window was made from. The response I received was a defensive email about how polycarbonate and BPA are safe for food contact and this kettle is safe. I've been reading the research on BPA and polycarbonate for years, so they didn't share anything new with me. I would have preferred their response to simply state "polycarbonate" and then offer to provide me with more information if I had any concerns.

Regardless, they weren't going to change my mind. I don't feel comfortable with polycarbonate around my boiling (or close to boiling) water and in this day and age where BPA is a huge uproar, I am super surprised that Breville came out with a brand new kettle containing polycarbonate. I would have loved to see this kettle...
Almost Perfect
I drink various types of teas constantly to my dentist's consternation, such as Irish and East Frisian in the morning with Pu Erh Tuo Cha and Green Jasmine in the evening. On the weekends I drink French Pressed coffee.

I did it the old fashioned way with a thermometer. Needless to say, but I will anyway, this kettle did make life simpler, but, (always a but) it has not functioned as advertised.

The primary issue is on the boiling setting for black teas. Sometimes it shuts off, and sometimes it doesn't. The other presets have worked flawlessly, and this may only be an anomaly with this particular pot.

I will say that I am going to order a second one, and send this one back to Breville for repairs. That should tell you how much I like the idea of this kettle.

The Perfect Electric Tea Kettle
My main reason for ordering the Hot Pot is that it is made from stainless steel and I am reluctant to boil water in one of the competing plastic pots since I fear the chemical leaching potential of electric plastic kettles. I wanted to add this review to the ones already listed to add some further information. On reading the earlier reviews, I could not get the answer to how fast the tea kettle will bring water to a boil. One review said that it is slower when set on the 120 volt mode for the US and that is where I will be using it primarily. I use it to boil water for my French Press coffee pot mostly which requires 16 ounces of water to make a full pot (19 ounce french press). 16 ounces of water boils in 3 minutes here at 3000 feet altitude while the full pot (to the "MAX" mark inside the pot) boils in just about 4 minutes. Then the pot clicks off, the light on the handle goes out and water has come to a full rolling boil. By contrast, my 1200 Watt microwave takes about 5 minutes...

More than my moneys worth
I've been using this kettle in Afghanistan for over three months now sharing it in a tent with seven other guys and also one of our female Soldiers who knocks on the door asking for hot water. It's used A LOT and keeps boiling HOT water. The size is handy, not too big. It's done everything I've wanted and looks like it's going to last the entire deployment.
Just what I was looking for!
I scoured the internet for days looking for a small, streamlined, non-clunky, non-plastic hot pot that held a quart or less of water for my daughter's desk at work. The hardest part was the non-clunky, non-plastic part! This little number is great! It heats water to a rolling boil in less than 3 minutes and then shuts off automatically and can only be restarted by pushing the reset button...so no accidental boiling dry or overheating. The outside of the pot does get hot!...but that's what being metal is all about. It's no worse than a percolator type coffee pot and is much like a small, streamlined percolator but with no basket or clunky dangling things to get in the way or snag on things or get lost. It's simply a nice little pot with a lid.

The only drawback I can foresee is that the cord is permanently wired into the base of the pot...no way to replace the cord, as you can do with an electric percolator by just going to the hardware store and getting a replacement...

A great kettle, a great value.
I read reviews for many electric kettles and in the end chose the great Oster 5965. It had no reviews at all, but had all the features that were important to us:

Concealed Element
Short cord/cord keeper
Auto-off, no whistle
Boil dry protection
Mesh/screen pouring filter
Water level indicator

This kettle boils water quickly and my favorite feature is the Keep Warm button. Especially helpful if you tend to get sidetracked like I do. Just don't forget to turn it off! It pours neatly, looks nice on the counter, and is great when you are cooking and need boiling water. The on/off switch is a rocker button and the Keep Warm is a push button. These two were a plus for me as they are sturdy to the touch. I felt the spring type switch on the Aroma (a contender) felt flimsy and that the time would come when it would not 'catch' in the on position.

The only con is the opening for adding water is rather small. I was concerned about...

Pretty & Functional Kettle
I bought this kettle to replace a plastic kettle that I've had for years. Concerns over plastic in contact with boiling water convinced me to buy a stainless kettle. There is a little plastic in the water with this kettle from the water level indicator but it is greatly reduced from my all-plastic version.

I bought this at Target because I wanted to check out the inside of it before purchase; there were no pictures online which is why I posted some at the top of this page.

It is 1500 watts and boils water fast. Also has a keep warm feature which is something I don't need. I have had no leaking water problems.

The opening is small but I can get my bottle brush inside to clean with no problem. The mesh filter pops right off. If you develop scale, just pour in a cup or so of vinegar, add some water & let it sit for an hour. I have very hard water so I do this every other week. I fill the kettle from my refrigerator water tap because that water is...
Excellent Product
The Oster stainless steel electric kettle lives up to its reputation in our household. We replaced our old and trusted plastic Oster electric kettle of many years good service, because we became concerned with boiling water in plastic which can leach toxins. The new design is beautiful to look at and has the added advantage of a "keep warm" feature the older model did not have. It is a bit less easy to read the water gauge, but you get used to it. It still boils water very fast, keeps it warm if you so wish and has no nasty taste or smell like so many other models you read about. It is heavenly for a tea drinker like me who drinks as many as ten cups a day!! Perfect for a fast oatmeal, instant coffee, instant soup, jello, adding boiling water when cooking soup and much more.
